Cleveland-based Landscape Firm Wins National Award for Design Project in Hunting Valley
The Pattie Group, Inc., located in Novelty, recently received the National Award from the Professional Landcare Network (“PLANETâ€) for the design of a private residence in Hunting Valley, an upscale suburb southeast of Cleveland. The Pattie Group, Inc. of Novelty created a backyard retreat – a gift from a client to his wife – “for all the vacations he never took her on.†What was once an overgrown jungle was transformed into a breathtaking woodland waterfall visible from all vantage points in the backyard and every window of the home, which makes this year-round waterfall an important part of the couple’s everyday life and even an integral part of their interior decor. The waterfall – built into the hillside – was constructed of shot concrete, rebar, and natural Ohio sandstone and river stone. Each rock was carefully chiseled to allow water to cascade perfectly. Rhododendrons, azaleas, jack pines, hillside creeper pines, cotoneaster ferns, and ivy create a lush backdrop and provide a natural softening to frame the waterfall. The Pattie Group also replaced an existing rotting deck with a new multi-level pine deck with a built-in planter highlighting the waterfall. Keeping the elderly couple’s needs in mind, wide steps allow easier access to the paved patio and waterfall. Tumbled, rough-top clay brick pavers were selected to brighten up the shady and sometimes dark yard while resisting the growth of slippery moss and mold build-up to allow for a safer walking surface. Rock-faced briar-hill sandstone steps link the upper gravel walk to the patio space. A screening fence with a secret gate was used to screen heat-pumps and keep the grandchildren out. Lighting, and irrigation were also part of the project. Project Director Jonas G. Pattie, designer Linda F. Pattie, and foremen Bill Collins & Steve Moore, were all very pleased with the completed project. “When I first saw this property, I was energized by all the potential it had to be truly spectacular,†says Jonas Pattie. “The transformation has been amazing.†But even more importantly to The Pattie Group, the client has been very pleased with the makeover. “Even now when I think about what has been done here, and even though I watched it unfold, saw the designs, and heard what Jonas said and described, I still cannot comprehend the magnitude of the transformation. It is truly breathtaking and far exceeded any of my wildest expectations,†states the client. “I sit and stare at this beautiful scene, and my cup runneth over.†“I rely on and trust The Pattie Group for a lot,†the client adds. “They have transformed our property into our own piece of paradise, and they maintain every aspect. They have even helped us with roof, gutter, siding and septic issues. They have been courteous and respectful of our privacy. They even bring the trashcans up and help bring in the groceries from time to time. It is so evident that they truly care about us and want to make sure we are happy,†the client states. “Working with The Pattie Group is a true pleasure and an easy decision for my wife and me.†Celebrating its 40th year of business, The Pattie Group designs, manages, and maintains landscaping, water features, irrigation systems, and outdoor lighting for countless prestigious clients such as the Cleveland Botanical Gardens, the Holden Arboretum, and countless homes and businesses.
