Start looking for pansy baskets in the Garden Centers. The wonderful fresh faces of the colorful flowers make excellent compliments to bulb plantings. They come in an assortment of colors form pastels to strong purples and yellows and the flowers last will into summer. I find the smaller viola varieties mix well with annuals Stock. Stock is hard to find, but it smells so wonderful that it is worth the hunt to find it. Stock is a cold weather plant so when the temperature gets in to the 90´s, they will start to fade.

Other biannuals that compliment the early spring garden are the pink daisy like flowers of English daisies and the clear blue flowers of For-get-me-net.  For those of you who garden in deer county, For-get-me-nots are not eaten by deer or rabbits. Allow some of the flowers to go to seed for next years plants.

Now is the time to fertilize your garden as well as your shrubs. I like to use a balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10. If you are using a fast acting fertilizer, apply it to the outer perimeter of the plants so you don't burn them. Apply a slow acting fertilizer in June that will feed the plants for the rest of the year.
